Celebrate National Roller Skating Month

By Lynette Anacker

September 24, 2015

The Roller Skating Association International’s (RSA) and their Kids Skate Free program encourages kids to become physically fit and active 365 days a year. This year’s National Roller Skating Month theme, “From the Rinks to the Rings” symbolizes a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness reminding kids of all ages that if you can dream it you can achieve it. Member skating rinks will be hosting month-long events celebrating the health benefits and fun that roller skating provides, several of which are offering free roller skating passes through their participation in the Kids Skate Free program. Parents can register up to four children to receive two passes each twice per week at www.kidsskatefree.com. 570,000 children have been registered for the Kids Skate Free program and the number continues to grow by more than 10,000 every week.

This year’s theme, “From the Rink to the Rings,” is an important message that roller skating isn’t just America’s favorite pastime, it’s also a stepping stone to a healthier and brighter future. In addition to the poster model, Chad Hedrick, winningest speed skater of all time, many famous Olympians began in the roller skating rink including Apollo Ono, J.R. Celski, Brian Boitano, Jennifer Rodriguez, Derek Parra, Brittany Bowe and more. This year’s poster represents the road Chad took to become an Olympic medalist from the roller skating rink (left) to competing (center) and winning (right) 5 medals and 52 titles as a world champion inline speed skater.

The RSA wants everyone to know that roller skating is one of the few activities that provides a complete aerobic workout for over 640 of the body’s muscles – especially the heart. Families, kids, and teens are encouraged to dedicate themselves to achieving an active lifestyle. To find your nearest skating rink, please click on Locator above.
