Roller Skating Foundation Seeking Donations & Encourages Scholarship Applicants

Every year, the Roller Skating Foundation provides upward of $18,000 to schools throughout the country and $9000 in scholarships to students.

This year, we sought out to increase the number of schools that hear about the program with a Tag a Teacher campaign so that teachers throughout the country learned about our grant program to take their students on STEM roller skating field trips, physical fitness trips, or end of year awards trips. The goal has always been to get more students into roller skating rinks (and helping rinks establish relationships with schools they may have never worked with before) by providing grants to schools for this purpose.

What was the result? We nearly quadrupled the number of applicants to the program, which this semester alone resulted in over $75,000 in grant requests! However, the Foundation can only provide a limited number of these grants to schools and would like to expand on the amount they can offer.

Every year, the Roller Skating Foundation holds a silent auction and a live auction during the RSA Convention. Items that are donated by members are put up for auction to help raise money to cover these grants, as well as $13,000 in scholarships to students.

Here’s how you can help...
Take a walk around your house or your rink and see what items you’re not using anymore that you think might help raise funds for the Foundation. Reach out to one of your celebrity friends to see if they have a little something they’re interested in donating (and they can set a minimum bid if they’d like). Whatever item you’re able to donate is helpful.
Here are some examples of items that have been donated in the past:

• Crocheted blankets or roller skating-themed stuffed animals
• Autographed memorabilia
• Paintings
• Ammunition
• Wine
• Gift Cards or certificates
• Art
• Gently-used rink items
• Air fryers
• Novelty items
• Arcade games
• Gently-used designer bags or clothes
• Game tickets
• A week’s stay at your summer home or time share
• X dollars to be used at a member RSM’s business

These are just a few examples. If you’re not using it and want to help support a worthy cause, the Foundation hopes you will consider donating your items or services for the live and silent auctions at the RSA Convention.

Looking Toward the Future of Fundraising
The Roller Skating Foundation, in an effort to raise funds to help increase our level of giving over the next several years, will be looking at new ways to help raised funds to provide more grants and scholarships throughout the coming years. Roller Skating Foundation Scholarship Deadline: March 31
Are you an RSA member rink or RSM affiliate member who has:

• An employee who will be graduating high school this year and entering college for the first time
• A child or other relative entering college for the first time
• A roller skating athlete over the age of 16

Then you’ll want to encourage them to apply for the RSF Scholarship! This year, they will be giving away up to $9000, and we encourage you to download the correct application to apply.

Applicants who are athletes AND high school seniors entering college this fall or next year may apply for both.
